Sony and Panasonic introduced a 300 GB drive
On March 10, 2019, the news appeared on Sony's official website that it, together with Panasonic, created a new format for optical discs. A new generation of optical media is called Archival Disk. It is highly likely that in the future such discs will come to replace today's Blu-ray media, with the maximum available volume of which today is 128 GB. The new development can accommodate as much as 300 GB of information.

Optical information carriers have an excellent property that can protect them from all kinds of chemical and physical damage. Archival Disk, according to developers, will be able to tolerate various extreme conditions: dust and humidity will not affect their further work. In addition, sudden changes in ambient temperature will not affect the new generation of disks too much. Note that not all carriers can endure sudden changes in temperature. The creators claim that Archival Disk can be an excellent choice for long-term storage of information, since it supports almost all file formats.
Surely, first of all, Archival Disk will be of interest to film studios, which currently release their films on Blu-ray media. Recall that Blu-ray is also used to store games on the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 consoles.
As for the technical characteristics, they have the following properties:
• The one-time Archival Disk is 300 GB.
• The pitch of the recording tracks is 0.225 micrometers.
• Errors on the disk are corrected using the Reed-Solomon code.
It should also be noted that the new generation of disks is two-way, that is, if necessary, the disk will need to be turned over.
The union of the two companies is not going to stop on this result and will soon plan to begin work on disks with a capacity of 500 GB, and then they want to put 1 TB of information into optical disks. A new generation of optical media Archival Disk should go on sale in the summer of 2020. It is not yet known whether they will be accessible to ordinary users or will be intended only for large organizations.
