Appearance and ergonomics
The gadget is sold in four colors: black, white, blue and red. We got the most restrained, classic version in black.
The back panel is not uniform: the gray ribbed pattern on the back shimmers in the light. It looks interesting, but not catchy. Still, Mi 9T Pro is not one of those models that are commonly called youth, but a serious flagship.
Attention is drawn to the camera module. Xiaomi does not have many actual lines where it is in the middle, and the Mi 9T is just one of them. On the one hand, there is nothing criminal in this, and on the other, the lower lens is blotted out with an index finger every now and then.
There are a couple of red elements on the smartphone’s body: the power button and the border of the upper 48 megapixel lens. In addition, the outgoing front camera module is highlighted in red.
In terms of hand position, the Mi 9T Pro resembles the Mi 9: it is a classic large flagship smartphone from Xiaomi.
Comes with a case. It is tough and matte, turning a smartphone that looks interesting into an emotionless piece of plastic. The classic silicone version would have looked better.
The Mi 9T Pro features an excellent Super ‑ AMOLED ‑ screen with Full HD + resolution. It is bright, detailed and contrasting, which is emphasized by the black and scarlet default theme.
In the settings, you can adjust the brightness of the display in night mode (it turns on when the slider is lowered and in low light), change the color tone, and also select one of 16 Always on Display screensavers.
All these traveling cameras are needed, in fact, only for competitions in framelessness. Here, the Mi 9T Pro can be easily awarded a point: the lower edge is still thickened, but the display seems limitless.
The sound is not bad, but again in mono. No headphones included. But there is Bluetooth support with aptX, an analog mini ‑ jack is also in place.
Mi 9T Pro received a set of three cameras: the main, ultra wide angle and telephoto lens. The module is strange. One of the eyes is located separately, next to it flaunts the inscription 48MP. But this lens is responsible for shooting with zoom, and for frames in high resolution – the sensor under it. However, this does not affect the work.
Such pictures are taken during the day on all three lenses in automatic mode. In my opinion, everything is very good. Click on the images for a better view.
One of the characteristics in which smartphone makers compete is the number of megapixels. By itself, it does not mean anything: the limited size of the camera matrix will not allow to improve the quality of images four times.
Creating 48 megapixel frames is not necessary in most scenarios. The difference between classic and HD ‑ shooting can be seen only with a strong (about tenfold) magnification and with good light. In the images below: on the left – the picture is in automatic mode, on the right – in the mode of creating 48-megapixel frames.
For the first time, we tested multi-pixel cameras with Mi 9. Note that in Mi 9T Pro everything works much better: the 48MP mode button is located in a convenient place on the screen, and the frame does not require processing time when shooting.
It is useless to use the zoom at night: the telephoto lens aperture is not enough. The main one is turned on, and the image is simply cropped. Therefore, we show examples of ultra-wide-angle and classic shooting.
In low light conditions, the "Night" mode helps. It not only draws dark portions of the frame with a minimum of noise, but also accurately aligns the exposure. Light sources are clearly visible, do not merge into a single light ball. In the images below: on the left – part of the picture taken in automatic mode, on the right – in the "Night" mode.
A separate plus portraiture. The bokeh shots here are gorgeous.
We pass to the next characteristic feature of the Mi 9T Pro – the front camera. First about the pictures. Everything is good and boring: during the day, selfies are excellent, in the evening – a little worse. Portrait mode works with a bang in any light.
The feature of the front camera is not in the specifications, but in the device. It is located inside the case and leaves with a characteristic sound and red backlight when activated.
The camera moves slowly. If you drop the smartphone during the shooting, the module will not have time to hide in the case. Face authorization takes forever. We will not mention the unreliability of mechanical modules, the lack of dust and moisture protection, and also the banal inconvenience.
The camera application of the Mi 9T Pro is concise. Everything that may be needed is in plain sight, and unpopular functions are hidden in the context menu of additional settings.
The first conclusions about performance can be made when reading specifications. Here, the top-end Snapdragon 855 is installed with a core frequency of up to 2.84 GHz, 6 GB of RAM and an Adreno 640 video chip. This hardware performs very well both in the system and in heavy games (PUBG flies in HDR ‑ mode) and in work cameras (processing 48-megapixel frames takes as much time as processing ordinary).
Here are the results of the Geekbench test:
And here is AnTuTu:
We also drove the Mi 9T Pro through the 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme benchmark. The program reported that the smartphone bypasses 98-99% of competitors in different tests. Perhaps this is too optimistic, but close to the truth: Mi 9T Pro is really a powerful model that does an excellent job of everything. In the general rating, it is not yet displayed, but there is a Redmi K20 Pro – this is the same smartphone under a different name.
The device is running Android 9.0 with the MIUI 10 shell. It moderately repeats the best features of iOS and supports fine-tuning.
The location and number of buttons in the quick access panel can be customized. With the "Screen Split" function, you can use two applications at the same time.
In place was the classic set of services from Xiaomi. We even refused to install them the first time we turned on, but the system still met us full of AliExpress, Yulia and Yandex.Taxi. All unnecessary can be deleted.
In general, MIUI 10 works quickly and correctly. This is a convenient shell that anyone who has dealt with smartphones can handle.
