Overview of Vivo NEX 3 – an unusual flagship without side buttons and with a moving camera
Endless screen and extendable selfie camera
Vivo NEX 3 is sold in a matte black box of unusual dimensions. There is a sash under the cover, and below all the components are laid out: a smartphone, a cover, instructions, headphones and an adapter with a cable.
The smartphone is presented in only one color – "shining night." The first thing that catches your eye is a block with three cameras. It is round and located in the center, and the lenses in it are a triangle. Below is a flash.
The second feature is a “waterfall” screen, protected from accidental clicks. The side edges of the display are bent, and there are no visible frames near them. The decision is for everybody.
The diagonal of the screen is 6.89 inches. It is made by OLED ‑ technology, has an excellent margin of brightness, but not the best resolution for its area is 1,080 × 2,256 pixels. Because of this, some of the icons on the display may not be very clear.
The next feature is a moving selfie camera. On the one hand, this is still a strange idea: smartphones with mechanical modules are less durable and not protected from moisture, and dust accumulates in their insides. On the other hand, the gadget would look less spectacular if we saw a drop or a bang under the top edge.
The unit with the camera and flash drives out slowly. It should be used only for selfies: authorization by face, although supported, is terribly inconvenient. The main way to unlock is a fingerprint. The scanner located at the bottom of the screen works quickly and confidently.
Vivo completely redefined the generally accepted look at the side buttons. They are absent in principle, instead of them are sensors. The one that is responsible for the power supply has a ribbed surface and responds not with the click of a mechanical key, but with a vibration feedback. Above and below it are volume sensors.
A strange decision: the main sensor is duplicated by the most ordinary mechanical button on top. She is also responsible for an emergency reboot of the device.
Vivo NEX 3 is not just a big, but a huge smartphone. It is wide and elongated. This is not a problem for those who are used to phablets, but in the process of using, they immediately notice the disadvantages of such dimensions. Firstly, to reach the top of the screen without fingering the smartphone is unrealistic. Secondly, the center of gravity sometimes shifts so that the device is easy to drop.
Included is a hard case. It will help the glass not break, and the aluminum frames will not be scratched.
Externally, the Vivo NEX 3 is one of the most unusual smartphones. At the same time, he has a restrained look. Some solutions seem strange, but in no way affect the experience of working with the device.
64 megapixel camera and night mode
There are three lenses on the back. The main one is with aperture f / 1.8 and a resolution of 64 megapixels. In automatic mode, he shoots at honest 16. We saw similar specifications when testing Redmi Note 8 Pro. Xiaomi's smartphone was three times cheaper, but the shooting experience is the same: the photos are excellent, but the automatic mode is usually enough.
Here are examples of enlarged areas of the frame. On the left – automatic mode, on the right – 64 megapixels. The better the lighting, the greater the difference.
And here are a few pictures without magnification, taken in automatic mode.
The next lens is ultra-wide-angle, with a resolution of 13 megapixels and aperture f / 2.2. It copes with the task in good light and is almost useless when shooting at night.
The third lens is a full-fledged telephoto lens (and not just a depth sensor). It makes it possible to take photos with double optical zoom without a noticeable loss of quality.
When shooting on the main camera, night mode is available. In it, the smartphone makes several frames at once, and then algorithms come into operation. The result is a correctly exposed image, but without overexposure.
When switching to a selfie camera, a set of smartphones is turned on. They can be turned off. Such pictures are taken without regular processing – the frame is often blurred.
Verdict: Vivo NEX 3 is hard to find fault with, but there is no need to talk about new experiences. This level has long been subject to smartphones with half the price.
Flagship processor and capacious battery
The Vivo NEX 3 has a top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor – the same as, for example, the gaming Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro. RAM – 8 GB. With this set, the gadget in synthetic tests shows itself at the level of Samsung Galaxy S10 and Xiaomi Mi 9.
The UFS 3.0 drive is also responsible for the performance – in theory, it works faster and more reliable than the memory in most other smartphones. Everything is supplemented by a system of VCAP algorithms, which increases power and reduces power consumption. For cooling at high load, the evaporation chamber is responsible.
It’s hard to feel how the new version of the drive or VCAP algorithms prove to work, but the fact: Vivo NEX 3 is very powerful. In multitasking mode, during the session in COD and working with the camera, we did not notice lags.
The processor is not the only piece of hardware that Vivo has paid attention to. For example, the AK4377A audio chip is responsible for playing music. This is a digital-to-analog converter from the Japanese company AKM with a built-in headphone amplifier, which was developed specifically for Hi-Fi players and audiophile smartphones. Therefore, on the Vivo NEX 3, you can listen to music in lossless ‑ formats with good headphones. The full-time speaker remained the most mediocre.
The battery for 4,500 mAh is responsible for autonomy. This is a lot, but the screen in less than 7 inches is actively spending percent of the charge, so even such a capacious battery can last only a day. It all depends on the use case.
The kit comes with a fast charger with a power of 22.5 watts, but also supports 44-watt. But wireless charging did not appear.

Vivo NEX 3 is a true flagship in many ways. These include one of the best modern processors, a capacious battery and NFC, which is not found in all Chinese smartphones.
Moreover, for every second item in the specifications there is some kind of but. The screen is simply huge and has no frames, but the pixel density could have been made even larger. The audio chip supports high-resolution music, but the full-time speaker is at the level of any budget "Chinese". You can use fast charging, but wireless – no longer.
Vivo NEX 3 is not yet ready to catch up with the main market leaders. However, it may be suitable for those who are tired of monotonous smartphones with proven design solutions.
Price Vivo NEX 3 – 59 990 rubles.
