Acer Aspire 8920G Notebook

In this model, all the ideas that have become industry trends have been collected: a 16: 9 aspect ratio display, touch control panel, Full HD support, a Blu-ray drive and great sound.

The laptop is made as part of the new design concept of Acer – at the time of this writing, it was known under the code name Gemstone 2.

First of all, we drew attention to the touch panel cursor control and media player, which is located to the left of the keyboard. To the right of the layout are four auxiliary keys that are responsible for calling up applications and activating wireless modules. Above the keyboard are two of the five satellites of the Home Theater sound system, closed by a black grid. The working panel of the computer is made of embossed plastic, this solution significantly improves tactile sensations during operation (a similar coating appeared on the touchpad). Between the mouse buttons is a biometric fingerprint scanner, under the touchpad – service power indicators. On the front of the laptop there was a place for three more speakers and a card reader. Above the display, developers placed a web-camera and a built-in microphone. The module connecting the display to the working panel is made in the form of a cylinder, on which a connector for connecting the power cable and an opening for the Kensington lock are made. In addition, in the bowels of the cylinder is a subwoofer of the speaker system.

The 18-inch laptop screen with a working resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and support for the Full HD standard made a pretty strong impression on us. And it's not even that the image on such a display looks almost flawless, and the response time of the matrix does not exceed 8 seconds. Just Acer Aspire 8920G was the first vendor to provide us with a working sample for testing with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. This solution will allow you to completely or almost completely get rid of the black bars in the lower and upper parts of the screen while watching a video and thus make the image truly widescreen.

To the right of the layout are four buttons for activating Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, as well as calling up an email client and a web browser. To the left of the keyboard is the touch panel mentioned above for controlling multimedia applications. It consists of six player control buttons, a circle for navigating lists and menus with the Enter no center button, volume control, and the exit and launch keys of the Arcade Deluxe proprietary media center. In addition, in the upper left corner of the working panel there are touch buttons to mute the sound and block the panel. Most of all, we liked the illuminated volume control, which allows you to adjust the sound level with one movement of the hand.

The laptop is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 processor with a clock frequency of 2.4 GHz (recall that in this case we are talking about the processor, codenamed Penryn), an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card and 4 GB of RAM. In addition, two hard drives with a total capacity of 320 GB are installed here – this is enough to store more than 70 DVD movies. The laptop’s optical drive can play and record not only standard dual-layer DVDs, but also Blu-ray media. Also note that the Acer Aspire 8920G showed excellent results in the 3DMark and CPUMark tests, which correspond to the position of the flagship computer. The laptop is equipped with an audio system Dolby Home Theater 5.1, which creates excellent surround sound, well fulfilling low frequencies. You don’t have to throw away your home theater, but you can completely forget about ordinary 2.1 desktop systems.

The set of laptop communication modules does not differ in originality – you are expected by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, wired USB 2.0, HDMI, LAN, a built-in modem, Express Card slot, VGA output, connectors for a microphone, headphones and line output, as well as a card reader, Supporting media in MMS, SD, xD and Memory Stick formats. In addition, a dummy was discovered on the engineering model of the laptop that we tested, which in serial models can turn into an IEEE 1394 port.

With average power consumption in Balanced mode and moderate load, the laptop can work in offline mode a little more than an hour and a half. Using Wi-Fi and listening to music at maximum volume can reduce this figure to 40-50 minutes.
