30 little-known iOS features that you didn’t even know about
1. Delete in the calculator
It turns out that the standard iPhone calculator has a delete function. Using it is much easier than resetting the calculations and re-entering the numbers. The next time you make a typing mistake, just swipe in any direction and delete the wrong numbers.
2. Fast character entry
Everyone knows about the quick entry of domain zones with a long press on the "point" and Caps Lock on the double tap of the Shift button. But many people don’t even know about entering symbols with one touch.
To quickly enter a number, punctuation mark, or other character, simply press the 123 key and, without lifting your finger, select the option you want. After that, the keyboard will automatically return to normal mode.
3. Cancel input
When you need to erase it after entering a large fragment of text, it is not necessary to delete characters one at a time. Instead, it’s more convenient to shake the smartphone in your hands and confirm the cancellation of the input in the pop-up window. If you change your mind, then you can repeat the action again and return everything to the original version.
4. Keyboard mode for one hand
For quick typing on the go, it’s more convenient to use the one-handed input mode. To turn it on, hold the language change button, and then click the keyboard icon on the left or right, depending on which hand you will hold the smartphone in. By clicking on the arrow, the usual input method returns.
5. Trackpad mode
The trackpad function is very useful when editing large texts, when you often need to move the cursor to highlight and edit. Instead of trying to control it with your finger, try to forcefully press the keyboard and, without tearing it off, move the cursor using the key area as a trackpad panel.
On an iPhone without 3D Touch support, this function also works, but to activate it, you need to press and hold the spacebar.
6. Quickly send geolocation and contacts to iMessage
When in the correspondence the interlocutor asks where you are, instead of a long description of the location, it is easier to send a mark on the map by clicking "Current geo-position" at the top of the keyboard.
This works due to integration with Siri, which recognizes similar requests in the text. In addition to geolocation, the assistant is able to operate with phone numbers and email contacts.
7. View notifications in folders
If you use application grouping by folder, then you probably often open them just to see which applications have unannounced notifications. A simpler option is to click on the folder icon. After that, a list of programs with notifications and their number will appear.
8. Choice of download order
When loading multiple applications, you can set priority for individual applications. To do this, with effort, click on the icon of the desired program and select "Prioritize Download" in the 3D Touch menu. Convenient for initial iPhone setup.
9. Removing unused applications
One way to save disk space is to enable the uninstall application removal feature. Their data will be saved, and the system will download the programs themselves from the device and reinstall them when they are needed.
To enable, open “Settings” → App Store and activate the “Download unused” toggle switch.
10. Move multiple applications
By putting things in order on the desktop or in folders, it is not necessary to move the icons one at a time. It’s much faster to transfer them at once in several pieces.
To do this, start moving one icon and, without lifting your finger, touch the ones you want to select. Elements will be collected in a stack that can be transferred both inside folders and on desktops.
11. Moving multiple objects in the “Files”
In the same way, you can select and move objects in the built-in “Files” application. The principle is absolutely identical: we begin to move the first element, then select the rest.
12. Sorting in “Files”
The sort function in the standard file manager is easy to overlook, but it is there. To open the corresponding panel and change the sorting, swipe down and select the desired grouping option. In the same menu, you can create new folders and switch the view from the list to thumbnails.
13. Decrease in brightness below the minimum
In the dark, even the minimum display brightness level may be too high. To save your eyes, you can activate the “Low Light” function, which darkens the screen.
To do this, go to “Settings” → “Basic” → “Universal Access” → “Zoom” → “Filter” and select “Low Light”. In the next item “Zoom Area” set “Full Screen”.
Return to the “Universal Access” section, scroll to the very end, and then go to “Quick Commands” and check “Zoom In”. Now, by triple pressing the Home button or the side button, the brightness will decrease. Repeated click will return the backlight settings to the standard ones.
14. Turning on the flashlight through Siri
In situations where your hands are dirty, busy or just do not want to take off your gloves, activate the flashlight with Siri. Call the voice assistant with the "Hello Siri" command and ask to turn on the flashlight. With his voice, you can turn it off.
15. Changing the brightness of the flashlight
By default, the brightness is set to the maximum level, but to save battery power it is easy to reduce. To call the adjustment slider on devices with 3D Touch, press with force the flashlight icon in the “Control Point”. On the rest – just hold your finger. In total, four brightness levels are available.
16. Quickly open links in the background
If you have to open many links in new tabs while surfing in Safari, you can save a lot of time with this feature. Instead of calling the context menu and choosing the option “Open in a new tab”, simply touch the link with two fingers – Safari will open it and make an automatic transition.
It’s not necessary to hit the link with both fingers – just touch one and press the second button anywhere on the page.
17. View recently closed Safari tabs
You should not delve into the history when you accidentally close any page. It’s much faster to return to it through the “Recently Closed Tabs” menu, which appears when you hold the button for creating a new tab.
18. Finding Safari Tabs
If you always keep a lot of open pages in the browser and are constantly looking for the necessary pages, leafing through them in the tab menu, then wasting your time. Better just turn your iPhone to landscape mode, being in the tab menu, and use the search. Well, or find the page you want in the thumbnail grid.
19. Search lyrics in Apple Music
In the Apple music service, you can listen to a song in your memory, even if you don’t know its name and artist. It’s enough to drive a line from a verse or chorus into the search, and the application will immediately find it.
20. Search for photos by several keywords
The standard iOS gallery is able to recognize objects in the photo, allowing you to search for pictures by one or another keyword. Few people know, but they can also be combined to narrow the search.
Start typing the phrase you want, select it from the list of suggestions, and then add the second and subsequent queries in the same way. Now the system will take into account all keywords when searching.
21. Expedited Charging
When the battery is exhausted, and there is not enough time to fully recharge, you can speed up the process by turning on airplane mode. This will help reduce the load in the background: remove notifications, connect to the network, use GPS. You can also use a more powerful adapter. For example, from the iPad.
22. Turn off music by timer
Surprisingly, even experienced iPhone users do not know about this feature. The standard timer is able not only to count the time, but also to stop playing music. For example, if you want to fall asleep under your favorite playlist.
You can do this by selecting the “Stop” option at the very end in the “At the end” sound setting menu. At the end of the timer, the music will mute. The function works with a standard player, Spotify and other third-party applications.
23. Precise time setting in the "Calendar"
By default, the time for calendar events is set in increments of five minutes. And, on the one hand, this is good: it is unlikely that you will be scheduled to meet at 12:27 instead of the more usual 12:30. However, sometimes the need to set the time accurate to the minute still arises.
In this case, you need to make a double tap on the wheel to set the time, and the minute step will change from five to one. Repeated double tap will return the previous option.
24. Dialing the last number
When you need to dial the last number, do not rush to open the call history and tap on the desired line. Better go to the dialer and press the call button – the contact used before this will immediately appear on the screen. And to call him, it remains only to press the receiver again.
25. Quick jump to settings
To quickly go to the settings of a specific application, it is not necessary to open the "Settings" themselves and look for the desired section there. Instead, just tell Siri the “settings” while in the program. And in a moment the corresponding section will open.
The iPhone has long had a building level feature, but starting with iOS 12, roulette has also appeared, working on the basis of augmented reality technology. Find it through the search and run it. To measure the size of an object or its area, you only need to point a camera at it.
The error will fluctuate within one centimeter for small objects and a few centimeters – when measuring a room. Pretty good for a tool that's always at hand.
In addition to roulette, the iPhone also has a magnifying glass. She works at the expense of the camera, but a little differently. You can enable the function through the universal access settings, but it’s easier to add it to the “Control Center” and start it from the curtain.
For more convenient perception, there are contrasting color filters, focus lock, as well as setting the magnification and turning on the backlight.
28. Protected notes
Keeping secrets is not necessary in questionable safe applications. Thanks to the password protection function, ordinary notes are quite suitable for this. To set a password, click the “Share” button, select “Block” and enter the desired combination.
Now, to open the note, you will have to enter a password or use Face ID or Touch ID.
29. Do Not Disturb by Location
In iOS 12, the Do Not Disturb mode can be turned on not only for a given time, but also until you exit a certain location. To take advantage of this, tap with the force of the crescent button in the control room and select “Until I leave this location”. Useful at a meeting, in a movie theater or other place where you need silence.
30. Going to sleep
When you enable the "Sleep mode" iOS will take care of your relaxation. iPhone will remind you when it's time to go to bed, and gently wake up in the morning. In addition, if you use the function in conjunction with the planned Do Not Disturb mode, upon waking up, the system wishes good morning and displays a weather forecast.
To activate, open “Clock” → “Sleep Mode” and indicate how much time you want to sleep per day. Go to "Settings" → "Do Not Disturb", turn on the "Scheduled" and "Go to bed" toggle switches.
