3 beauty lifehacks to save your skin in the cold
What your skin suffers in the cold
Both the piercing November wind and the dry indoor air make the skin especially vulnerable. She seems to be suffering from dryness, although in reality the problem is her dehydration. These concepts are often used as synonyms, although there is a significant difference between them. Dry skin is a lack of natural fats, and dehydration is a lack of moisture.
Our skin has a lipid barrier that traps harmful substances and slows down the evaporation of water. When the lipid barrier is damaged, and this can happen due to very dry air, moisture from the skin evaporates faster, and you feel tight. Tones by the middle of the day “roll off”, and the face becomes dull, and peeling may appear on the skin. To cope with this problem, you need to nourish the skin with moisture and help keep it in the lipid barrier. This is the main thing that you should pay attention to in the cold season, without missing other basic skin care procedures.
How to care for your skin: three main steps
1. Gentle cleansing
This is necessary in order to wash away sweat, dust, makeup residues and excess fat from the skin. Cleansing should be thorough but gentle. Do not wash yourself “to the creak”: this violates the protective barrier of the skin, and it quickly loses moisture.
For cleansing, it is better to choose cosmetics with a mild non-aggressive composition, usually in the names the words “delicate”, “moisturizing”, “nourishing” are used. The type of product – gel, foam or milk – does not matter and depends on your preference.
If you use decorative cosmetics, first dissolve it with makeup remover: micellar water, hydrophilic oil, balm or milk. Means with oils in the composition cope well with dissolution and do not dry the skin. Wash off any remaining makeup and remover with a foam or wash gel. Do not use hot water to cleanse your face, especially in the off-season: it rinses fats off the skin well and makes cleansing more aggressive.
Those who want to take skin care to a new level in the cold should take a closer look at the cleansing brushes for facial skin, which thoroughly, but not aggressively help cleanse the skin and remove dead skin cells.
The host of the YouTube channel Lifehacker, Irina Rogava, tried out such a beauty assistant – the FOREO LUNA 3 brush. As it turned out, in addition to cleansing, this gadget has another important function that will help save on beauty salons. Using this brush, you can massage different areas of the face, neck and décolleté. In general, the use of such gadgets contributes to better penetration of care products. Learn about Irina’s impressions of an unusual device from this video.
Using FOREO LUNA 3 is very simple: apply a mild cleanser to your face, moisten your brush and turn on the cleaning mode. For a minute, in a circular motion, move the device across the face. Rinse your face with water, lightly pat it with a soft towel and proceed to the next step – moisturizing.

2. Soft exfoliation
This stage is necessary in order to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin. If you skip exfoliation, then all subsequent care procedures will be useless: the nutrients from cosmetics will simply be absorbed into the stratum corneum.
There are two main ways to exfoliate:
mechanical – means with abrasive elements (for example, a cream for washing with peach stones),
chemical – cosmetics with special substances (for example, peeling with fruit acids).
How often you need to carry out the procedure of exfoliation in the cold, depends on the type of your skin. If it is oily or combined, you can use mild peeling with a small or medium concentration of acids almost daily. If the skin is dry, then such products should be applied no more than twice a week. In the cold season, it is better not to get carried away with abrasive particles. It is so easy to overdo it and break the lipid barrier of the skin.
3. Intensive hydration
Dehydrated skin needs to be intensely moisturized. Immediately after washing, use products with water-retaining components. Such products are usually liquid and are available in the form of a tonic, lotion, serum, toner or essence. Apply to damp skin to help retain water. And then the moisture must be “sealed” with a layer that will prevent rapid evaporation: use a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type. Creams that help the natural lipid barrier work, can be recognized by the barrier repair inscription on the packaging.
Take care of hydration and the inside: keep track of the water-salt balance, drink enough clean water and do not endure thirst. It is important not to overdo it: too much water at night will provoke swelling in the morning.
Help your skin, often including a humidifier. Modern devices are available in different sizes. So, indoor will maintain the necessary humidity during the night, and compact humidifiers compensate for the dryness of office air.
Morning and evening skin care will take less time than reading this article. And moisture deficit, discomfort and a feeling of tightness will cease to bother you, even if the weather application promises "-5, it feels like an ice storm in the Arctic."
